“Aslan is On the Move”
A Peek into the Wardrobe
Vacation Bible School was filled with surprises this year. Each evening, the children were greeted by The Professor and invited into his study to step into the fantasy world of Narnia with Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy in the animated version of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.
All the participants were welcomed through our wardrobe by Mr. Tumnus and Mr. and Mrs. Beaver, who accompanied the children on their journey throughout the week. The children were guided in declaring their own values to take with them on their adventure: caring, friendship, loyalty, honesty – these were all values they would need to defeat the white witch, who tempted them to “follow their desires, not their hearts”. As their peers shouted “don’t listen to her”, the witch continuously taunted them and whispered to them to question what they really want.
Good was ultimately victorious as each child had the opportunity to redeem him/herself by asking for forgiveness, and given a second chance to do the right thing. The participants proudly wore their values on their shields as the fought the evil of the white witch, who was weakened by the goodness Aslan brought into Narnia. Four brave participants stepped forward to represent Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy, to knight each child into the service of Aslan (always fighting for good) and to crown each child Kings and Queens of their own lives.
Do any of these themes sound familiar? Although this is a story of a fantasy world full of mythical creatures, it is one that is found throughout the Bible, which is what all the participants found out as they brought each evening to a close back in the Professor’s study. The week ended with a celebration with parents and family, the singing of songs presented by the children, and sharing of the body and blood of Christ.
We are thankful to everyone who made this program a success, the talents shared throughout the week and to the entire parish for supporting this ministry.
