Children’s Sunday Morning Classes
Sunday school classes are from 9:30 am until 10:15 am. Children ages 3 years through 2nd grade begin the morning with 10 minutes of raising their voices in song as the St. Nicholas Singers. The children are then led to their classrooms where they begin their lesson using the lectionary-based curriculum Living the Good News. This program connects families and unites the entire parish by teaching the same scripture stories heard in the liturgy, in Christian education classes and at home with the weekly take-home papers.

Participants will also gain a greater exposure to “things Episcopal”. The curriculum honors the rhythms of the Church year, the creeds and prayers of the Church, the Catechism, Episcopal hymns, songs, saints and feast days.

Classroom Locations: The PreK-Kindergarten and the 1st and 2nd grade classrooms are both on the ground floor. The 3rd - 5th grade classroom can be found at the top of the stairs on the third floor.

Nursery
A nursery for children not yet school-age and younger is provided during Sunday school and the 10:30 worship service. The nursery is staffed by at least two nursery workers each Sunday morning and overseen by the nursery coordinator, Lisha Akers, and a committee of parents. The nursery is located on the ground floor.

Vacation Bible School

Each summer, children from the parish, the community, friends, family, grandchildren, neighbors, nieces and nephews all join together to enjoy several days of singing, laughing, storytelling, acting, creating and playing all while learning God’s word, the love of Jesus and being a part of a community of faith. Holy Comforter’s Vacation Bible School program is designed for preschoolers up to fifth grade, however, there’s often special activities and projects for youth 6th grade and older as well as opportunities to become active volunteers with the younger children.

Read about past sessions. See the VBS Archive at right.

The 2008 Vacation Bible School program is scheduled for July 13 – 17th each evening beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the Great Hall and education classrooms. Anyone interested in signing their child or children up for VBS, is welcome to contact the Christian Formation Director at the church during the week. Maybe you are a member of Holy Comforter and would just like to volunteer in some capacity this year? Let us know, and we will find a place for you!A nursery for children not yet school-age and younger is provided during Sunday school and the 10:30 worship service. Other Opportunities for Children

St. Nicholas Singers
Each Sunday morning, children ages 3 years through 2nd grade join together at the beginning of Sunday School to learn the faith through song. Under the direction of Ms. Julie Steed, the Singers offer their voice to worship four times a year.

Children’s Chapel
Children’s Chapel is offered during the first half of the second service for preschool and elementary age children. It is designed to introduce our younger children to the liturgical celebration of God’s love. The children hear a Bible story and read scripture which is relative to the week’s liturgy. Learning Episcopal traditions, music, The Lord’s Prayer, The Doxology and praying together are all components of Children’s Chapel as they begin to understand themselves as Christians. The children are then led into the service to receive Communion with their parents.

Chancel Drama
The children “marched around the walls of Jericho” in the story of Joshua on March 18th for this year’s Chancel Drama presentation. Under the direction of Juli Hauser and Jan Kelly,  the class spends several months exploring in depth one of the great stories of our faith, constructing sets and costumes, and developing a short play offered as the sermon at worship. Next year’s Chancel Drama is already being planned. The 3rd – 5th graders will present “Jesus and the Sea of Galilee” on April 6, 2008 during both services.

Children’s Bibles
Each child entering the 2nd grade who considers Holy Comforter their home church will receive The Complete Book of Bible Stories by Jesse L. Hurlbut. This timeless classic, originally published 70 years ago, has been updated with a new name, new cover and simplified text for today’s children. It is filled with beautiful art pieces that make the Bible stories come alive. Children will be able to enjoy this book for years to come. Children will then receive their own personalized New Revised Standard Version Bible upon entering the 6th grade.
