Service Style and Format Our worship at Holy Comforter takes on many forms. Typically, we use contemporary language and rites in our services. However, depending on the season, we will use a traditional language and rite in order to more deeply explore our need for penitence. On Sunday mornings, we celebrate the Holy Eucharist, which is also known as Holy Communion or the Lord’s Supper. The beginning of this service contains many readings from scripture including readings from the Old Testament (the Hebrew Scriptures), the Psalms, the New Testament (usually a letter from Paul or one of the original apostles), and from one of the four Gospels. We are then instructed in interpreting these scriptures and applying them to our own lives by way of the sermon or homily. This is followed by an affirmation of the tenets of our faith through the words of one of the creeds of the ancient church. We then enter a time of prayer where we pray for the needs and concerns of the world, the church and our own community closing with a prayer asking for forgiveness for our sins. After some brief announcements we transition to the part of the service focused on the Lord’s Supper. After asking God to bless our offerings of Bread and Wine, we gather at the altar at the front of the church to share in the Body and Blood of Christ present in the Bread and Wine. The later of the two Sunday morning services includes a full choir with organ and hymns.Sunday evenings during certain times of the year, we will have worship that centers around prayer and scripture. These services which can be either Compline or Evening Prayer, are experiential in nature and are led by the choir. Wednesday mornings, we gather for an abbreviated Communion service which includes the laying on of hands for healing. In addition, the clergy make monthly visits to two retirement villages in Burlington (Twin Lakes and the Village of Brookwood) for similar services. |
