Watch our video: "All Things Come of Thee"
This 21 minute video includes scenes of worship and heart-felt testimonials. Church member Jocelyn Safrit declares, "I think [Holy Comforter] has provided a place for me to question and search that...I don't think I would have found [in] too many other places...it certainly has strengthened the spiritual aspects in my life."

Our History

Located in the heart of downtown Burlington, Holy Comforter began with our beloved, quaint St. Athanasius Church in the church grove built in 1880 by founding families.

The sanctuary of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter with its Gothic architecture and tower, consecrated by Bishop Joseph B. Cheshire in 1911 and truly a comfort to successive generations, was a gift from Lawrence S. Holt, Sr. and Margaret Erwin Holt in memory of their young daughter Emily F. Holt.

Every Easter morning after worship services, the congregation, led by our children and the crucifer, follows the Flowering Cross in procession to Emily’s grave in the church grove.

The current congregation of Holy Comforter numbers about 500 members and visitors from across Alamance County, up and down the roads between Chapel Hill and Greensboro. We are the only Episcopal parish in the city of Burlington and are known for being a caring community of diverse perspectives, lively faith, and commitment to service.

Come and join us for Sunday worship and everyday fellowship.
